Improving the findability of information with AI-powered search on aalto.fi - Oona Saanio and Leevi Vahvelainen

Time Slot Fri 2:00pm to 2:45pm (5/8/26) Room Auditorium Session Category AI & Technology

We’ll share how AI-powered search features were introduced to the Aalto University website to improve the search experience for the site’s various user groups – from students and staff to applicants and other external visitors.

The set of AI-powered features developed for aalto.fi includes query enhancement, question answering based on search results, and suggestions for more refined search terms. Together these features tackle challenges with vague queries, better align search results with user intent, and aim to improve the overall search experience and make it easier to find the right information. During the session, we will cover the project’s background and goals, UX considerations, how the features were refined and implemented alongside the existing search capabilities, and lessons learned.
